Coaching is an approach that we have experienced in sports or business but rarely in marriage. Coaching comes from the perspective that each couple knows what they need to grow closer, but they could use some assistance from a coach.
What is the difference between counseling and coaching? Counseling is the process of working with couples through the many aspects of their lives and working to increase communication, vulnerability and trust. I work with couples in counseling to be able to increase insight around the interaction of lived experience, core beliefs, behavior, and their emotions. Coaching focuses on teaching couples tools to apply to their relationship to help bring about positive change and connection. Coaching is a brief and guided approach to help couples with a few specific issues in their relationship.
Coaching is for:
- Couples are looking for help getting closer to their partner
- Couples who are looking for tools to help communicate more effectively
- Couples who are wanting focused and short term guidance
Couching is not for:
- Couples with significant, long term challenges in their relationship.
- Couples with infidelity issues.
- Couples who are not willing to work on tools independently in between session.
